What causes Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis refers to damage and degeneration of the Plantar Fascia ligament at the bottom of your heel and foot. When this ligament is put under pressure, is strained or damaged, it becomes inflamed and tender. 


A study in 2014 published by the British Journal of Sports Medicine reveals new treatments that may assist sufferers of this disorder. Whilst orthodics, supportive socks and insoles and rest are proven to be helpful, long term treatment and even a cure have remained elusive. This study may just have some answers. 

The actual cause of Plantar Fasciitis remains unknown. Each case tends to be different, depending on the patient. Doctors once thought bony growths called heel spurs brought on pain. Now they believe that heel spurs are the result -- not the cause -- of plantar fasciitis.

You’re at greater risk of plantar fasciitis if you:

  • Are female
  • Are 40 to 60 years old
  • Are overweight
  • Have flat feet or high arches
  • Have tight Achilles tendons, or “heel cords”
  • Have an unusual walk or foot position
  • Often wear high-heeled shoes
  • Have a pre-existing foot injury
  • Spend many hours standing each day
  • Wear worn-out shoes with thin soles
